Licenses and activation

Install your license

After your purchase you receive your license by e-mail, as a .license file or as a single line starting with JTL1.. Install it with either command:

jaytail license install jaytail.license
jaytail license install --key 'JTL1.…'

install verifies the license before storing it and says why when it refuses one. There is no account and no activation: jaytail checks the signature offline, and never contacts a server for licensing.

Check it

jaytail license # status: licensee, edition, updates, whether it covers this release
jaytail license --json # the same, for scripts
jaytail license show # every installed license
jaytail license remove ID # remove one

Several machines

A license is personal and works on all the machines you use: install it on each one. A company buys one license per person who uses jaytail.

CI and containers

JAYTAIL_LICENSE can hold the license line for a single run, without installing it:

JAYTAIL_LICENSE='JTL1.…' jaytail --plain=table app.jsonl

What a license covers

  • Edition. Minimal covers the viewer, exports, --plain and --web. Complete adds creating transfer tickets (jaytail send FILE, jaytail request). Answering a ticket (jaytail receive, jaytail send TICKET FILE) never needs a license.
  • Versions. Every jaytail version released within your 12 months of updates keeps working forever. Complete Lifetime covers all future versions. A version counts by the release date of its feature release (for example 1.2.0), so security fixes for a version you own (1.2.1, 1.2.2...) are covered too.
  • Newer versions. When a release is outside your update period, jaytail license says so; the versions you own keep working.
  • Without an eligible license, viewing stops with exit status 3, after a short evaluation period.

Where licenses are stored

One file per license, named after its license ID:

SystemLicensesjaytail state (evaluation, request keys)
Linux~/.config/jaytail/licenses/ ($XDG_CONFIG_HOME)~/.local/share/jaytail/ ($XDG_DATA_HOME)
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Jaytail/licenses/~/Library/Application Support/Jaytail/
