jaytail is one executable with no runtime and no dependencies. The same download serves customers and anyone answering a jaytail ticket; a license is installed separately.
Linux and macOS
curl -fsSL https://jaytail.dev/install | sh
The installer needs no administrator rights and no terminal, so it also works inside a one-line command on a server. It reads the current version, the archive address and its SHA-256 from https://jaytail.dev/latest.json, downloads the archive from GitHub, verifies the checksum and installs:
| What | Where |
|---|---|
jaytail | ~/.local/bin (override with JAYTAIL_INSTALL_DIR) |
jtail, jt | the same directory, as links, unless another program already has the name |
| man page | ~/.local/share/man/man1/jaytail.1 (override with JAYTAIL_MAN_DIR) |
| bash, zsh, fish completion | under ~/.local/share (zsh: add ~/.local/share/zsh/site-functions to fpath) |
| license notices | ~/.local/share/doc/jaytail |
If ~/.local/bin is not on your PATH, the installer says so. Right after installing, run
~/.local/bin/jaytail or open a new terminal.
Windows
In PowerShell:
irm https://jaytail.dev/install.ps1 | iex
This installs into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\jaytail (override with JAYTAIL_INSTALL_DIR), adds
that directory to your user PATH, and creates jtail.cmd and jt.cmd unless the names are
taken. Options need the script-block form:
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm https://jaytail.dev/install.ps1))) -Minimal -NoPath -Completions
-Minimal installs the Minimal build, -NoPath leaves PATH alone, -Completions adds tab
completion to your PowerShell profile.
Manual download
The download page lists every archive with its SHA-256. Check it before unpacking:
echo "<sha256> jaytail-<version>-<target>.tar.gz" | sha256sum -c # macOS: shasum -a 256 -c
tar -xzf jaytail-<version>-<target>.tar.gz
./jaytail-<version>-<target>/jaytail version
Each archive contains jaytail (jaytail.exe on Windows), the man page jaytail.1, shell
completion scripts, README.md, LICENSE and THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.md. Put the executable
anywhere on your PATH.
Minimal build
The Minimal build is the same viewer without any network code: it cannot take part in transfers
(send, receive, request). It is meant for environments where networking tools are not
allowed. Install it with curl -fsSL https://jaytail.dev/install | sh -s -- --minimal, or with
-Minimal on Windows. Every license works in both builds.
Updating
Run the installer again. It replaces the executable and keeps your licenses.
Uninstalling
Linux and macOS, with the default locations:
rm -f ~/.local/bin/jaytail ~/.local/bin/jtail ~/.local/bin/jt
rm -f ~/.local/share/man/man1/jaytail.1 ~/.local/share/man/man1/jtail.1 ~/.local/share/man/man1/jt.1
rm -rf ~/.local/share/doc/jaytail
Completion scripts are in ~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions,
~/.local/share/zsh/site-functions and ~/.local/share/fish/vendor_completions.d. On Windows,
delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\jaytail and remove it from your user PATH. Licenses and
jaytail's own state are kept in the directories listed under
Licenses and activation; delete them too if you
want nothing left.
