Privacy notice

Draft, not yet reviewed. Do not rely on this text.

jaytail is developed and sold from Italy, under EU law.

This notice explains which personal data Lean Squid srls processes for this website, for purchases and licenses, for support and for the jaytail relay, and which rights you have under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Who is responsible

The controller is Lean Squid srls, 35010, Vigodarzere (PD), Italy. For anything about your data, write to legal@jaytail.dev.

The jaytail program

Viewing, searching and exporting logs happen only on your computer. jaytail has no account, sends no telemetry and checks your license offline. The Minimal build makes no network connections at all. The program connects to the network only for a transfer: jaytail send, jaytail receive and jaytail request (see below).

This website

  • No cookies, no analytics and no third-party requests: fonts and images are served from our own server. The one exception is the checkout page, described under Purchases.
  • The web server records the IP address, date and time, requested page, response status, referring page and browser identification of each request, to deliver the site and protect it against abuse. Legal basis: our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). These logs are deleted after [N days].
  • The server is hosted by Vultr in [region].

Purchases

Orders are processed by Paddle.com, our reseller and Merchant of Record. The checkout page (/buy/) is the only page of this site that loads Paddle's checkout script; Paddle then receives what you enter in the payment form. Paddle collects payment and billing data under its own privacy notice; we never receive card details. Paddle sends us your name, e-mail address, country, the product you bought and the order reference. We use them to issue and send your license, to answer your questions and to meet tax and accounting obligations. Legal basis: the contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) and legal obligations (Art. 6(1)(c)). Order records are kept for [10 years, Italian accounting rules: to confirm].

Licenses

Your license contains the licensee name you give us. We keep a register of issued licenses (license ID, licensee name, edition, update period, order reference, date) so that we can resend a license, replace it, or revoke it after a refund. Legal basis: the contract. Kept for [period].

Support

When you write to us, we use your message and address to answer. Kept for [period] after the conversation ends.

Sending files with jaytail

  • Direct transfers. The two computers connect to each other, and each one sees the other's IP address. We are not involved. A ticket contains the network addresses of the computer that created it, unless it was created with --relay-only.
  • Through the relay. When a direct connection is not possible, or with --relay-only, the transfer passes through the jaytail relay (relay.jaytail.dev), which we operate. The file is encrypted end to end: the relay forwards packets it cannot read and stores nothing of the file. To route traffic and prevent abuse it processes IP addresses, endpoint identifiers, connection times and data volumes. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating the service. Connection logs are deleted after [N days]. The relay is hosted by Vultr in [region].

Recipients

Vultr (hosting of the website and the relay), Paddle (Merchant of Record), [e-mail provider], and our accountants and tax advisers where the law requires it. [Transfers outside the EU and their safeguards, if any]

Your rights

You can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction of processing and a copy in a portable format, and you can object to processing based on our legitimate interest. Write to legal@jaytail.dev. You can also lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, or with the authority of the country where you live or work.
