Changelog

jaytail 0.9.0

November 3, 2026

The first public release of jaytail.

Viewer

  • Opens JSON Lines files of any size at once, a pipe (spooled to a private temporary file), or a file picker when started without arguments.
  • Recognizes time, level and message columns without configuration (zerolog, zap, logrus, slog, pino, bunyan and similar output); levels normalized from TRACE to PANIC; RFC 3339 and Unix epoch times in the local timezone or UTC.
  • Search in the raw text or in a field (field:text, nested paths, escapes), next/previous match, matching rows only.
  • Level filter (at least or exactly) and field filters, combined with AND.
  • Record view with the whole object; malformed and oversized lines stay visible.
  • Selection by marks, ranges or the whole view; copy of the original lines to the clipboard (OSC 52 over SSH); export to JSONL, JSON, CSV or HTML.
  • --plain output (JSONL or an aligned table) for scripts, --columns, --level, --time-format, --utc, --no-color.
  • --web: the same viewer in a browser tab, served on 127.0.0.1 only behind a random token.

Transfers (standard build)

  • jaytail send FILE offers a file; jaytail receive TICKET fetches it, opening it in the viewer while it arrives.
  • jaytail request asks someone for a file; they answer with jaytail send TICKET FILE.
  • Every ticket comes with a link to a page on jaytail.dev that explains how to answer it; --qr shows the link as a QR code and --qr-image reads one from a photo.
  • End-to-end encryption, direct connections or the jaytail relay, BLAKE3 verification of the whole file, resumed transfers, automatic switch to the relay when it is faster; --relay-only, --expire.

Licensing

  • Offline licenses (jaytail license): Minimal or Complete, 12 months of updates or Lifetime.
  • Creating a transfer ticket needs Complete; answering one is free and needs no license.

Distribution

  • Linux x86_64 and ARM64, macOS Intel and Apple silicon, Windows x86_64.
  • Standard build and Minimal build (no network code).
  • Installers for Linux, macOS and Windows; man page, shell completions, jtail and jt aliases.
